A Prodeo Academy Classroom Teacher is intensely focused on each student’s growth. To do this, the Classroom Teacher provides a loving, structured classroom rooted in high expectations for behavior and learning. The Classroom Teacher will report to the Principal and will work in partnership with all members of the school team and Grade Team Leader. VISION FOR POSITION
Educate, plan, teach, facilitate and evaluate students with special education needs according to local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.

POSITION FUNCTIONS

Select, plan, and deliver appropriate instructional activities for special education students that meet IEP goals and objectives and align with state standards.

Monitor student progress according to IEP goals and make instruction changes when appropriate; report student progress to parents regularly.
Coordinate curriculum and teaching procedures with other general and special education staff members.
Attend and participate in scheduled activities such as open houses and parent conferences.
Supervise students according to an established schedule.
Work with support staff, classroom teachers, and administration in dealing with student concerns in and outside of the teacher classroom.

Ensure Due Process requirements are met.

Participate in interdisciplinary child study team and make appropriate referrals, assessments, eligibility, and diagnosis recommendations.
Accurately administer and interpret diagnostic assessment instruments, behavioral observations, and/or reports appropriate for the area of training.
Case manages students with disabilities and coordinates the development of Individual Education Program (IEP) evaluation plans, positive behavior support plans, and assessments for special education eligibility.
Complete and distribute due process paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.

Communicate and collaborate with parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, and outside professional agencies professionally.

Communication occurs regarding the needs of students with disabilities, including but not limited to student progress, curriculum and instructional needs, and concerns.

VISION FOR POSITION

The Director of Special Education is responsible for creating and designing a Total Special Education System (TSES) across Prodeo’s network, which supports student achievement, focuses on inclusion, and provides for the necessary legal mandates. The Director of Special Education will collaborate with Special Education Coordinators and Prodeo’s external partner, Creatively Focused, in monitoring and coordinating the network’s due process rules and regulations and to assure that these procedures are in compliance with state and federal regulations with regard to special education for children with disabilities and to implement special education services which are in compliance with appropriate services for student with disabilities. This leader is directly responsible for special education student growth, including meeting IEP goals and academic and social-emotional progress toward assessment goals and proficiency.

POSITION FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Consultation

Set long-term strategic vision for network special education program and development of students with special needs
Provide technical assistance on legal and regulatory compliance in the area of special education.
Develop and maintain child find, identification, assessment, placement, IEP development, review processes, and keep problem-solving manuals and guidelines updated.
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance, including due process and procedural safeguards (shared responsibility with principals and executive directors).
Ensure the implementation of Extended School Year programs.
Assist with the budget process for special education.
Advise principals regarding the utilization of special education funded staff and support principals in model implementation.

Resource Management

Determine the need for special education staff, transportation, equipment, services, outside evaluation, and placement.

Staff Development

Supervise the development and maintenance of documents to support the implementation of best practices in due process and instructional delivery.
Analyze staff development needs and provide staff development activities that address common areas of need and interest, with an emphasis on inclusion.
Evaluate and select effective curricula, train staff to proficiency within them, and monitor fidelity of instructional plans.
Lead special education coaching, including coaching coaches, teachers, and educational assistants when necessary. This includes observing coaching and providing feedback to support student growth.
Assist principals in developing meaningful systems for supervising and evaluating special education reimbursed staff job performance.
Assess Assistive Technology needs and provide staff development as necessary.

Communication and Collaboration

Act as the School-Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) liaison.
Establish and maintain Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC).
Provide conciliation services between the parents and schools when necessary. Assess school/parent miscommunication issues common to member schools and develop products and processes for improving school/parent communication.
Advocate for students’ rights to a free appropriate education.
Evaluate Creatively Focused services according to expected long-term outcomes and short-term annual service goals and report to member schools on an annual basis.
Maintain an updated CST calendar across all schools.

Administrative Processes

Collect and report Federal unduplicated child count data.
Collect and report State child count data and apply for state programs.
Supervise the collection and reporting of MARSS handicapped data.
Collect summer school attendance data.
Manage monitoring, complaint, compliance, mediation, hearing, and conciliation issues.
Request licensure variances when necessary.
Manage SpEd Forms database.
Oversee third-party billing procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Leadership in supervising program and paraprofessionals.

EDUCATION AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification Requirements: Administrative License as a Director of Special Education preferred but not required. Licensure in special education or related service area such as special education by disability, school social worker, school psychologist, and speech-language pathologist preferred but not required.
Physical Effort Required: Position requires extended periods of standing when teaching or leading an activity; infrequently bends, stoops, and/or sits on the floor for extended periods of time to provide instruction one-to-one assistance with students. Occasionally requires extended periods of sitting during meetings and desk work to perform keyboarding activities for class preparation, grading, and related special education paperwork—periodic lifting of students or equipment up to 40 lbs.
Mental Effort Required: Position requires working with interruptions, classroom noise, handling multiple tasks, and organizing and prioritizing work assignments. Position often employs strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills in dealing with students, staff, and parents.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Electronic Devices, Software Required: Operates a computer with grading, word processing, e-mail, and due process and data management software programs. Operates phone, copier, calculator, fax, printers, doc camera, Smart Board (or like equipment), other electronic resources available to staff, and assistive technology, as needed, by special needs students.
